2 Area Athletes Sign With Dordt

Sioux Center, Iowa — A pair of area athletes have inked Letters of Intent to attend Dordt College in Sioux Center this fall.

Mikaela Van Soelen, a senior at Unity Christian High School, has announced her intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender track and field program, and Kendrick Van Kekerix, a senior at Rock Valley High School, has announced his intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender basketball program.

Van Soelen has been used primarily as a sprinter at Unity and has been a part of a 4×200 relay team that earned a conference championship. She’s been on four Unity teams that have won the last four War Eagle Conference girls track and field titles.

Mikaela is the daughter of Tim and Jill Van Soelen. She plans to study Business and Journalism at Dordt College.

Van Kekerix averaged 9.0 points per game with three rebounds and two assists per game as a junior. He sat out his senior season with an injury suffered during Boyden Hull/Rock Valley’s state title run in football. Van Kekerix is a 6-0 guard.

“Kendrick is a big recruit for our program as he possesses a great deal of potential and is also an outstanding young man. He is a very good perimeter shooter who is able to stretch the defense. Having to sit out his senior season of basketball due to an injury has made him even more determined and hungry. We look forward to working with him for during his time on our campus,” said Dordt College basketball coach Ross Douma.

Kendrick is the son of Scott and Erika Van Kekerix of Rock Valley, Iowa. He plans to study Agriculture at Dordt College.
