Comet Girls Take Class 2A Region 1 Quarterfinal

Hawarden, Iowa — Tuesday night’s 2A Region 1 Quarterfinal brought together two well-matched teams in the Boyden-Hull Comets and West Sioux Falcons.

 In the first quarter the Comets came out with quick defense and ball movement on the court.  Boyden Hull outscored West Sioux 10 to 5 in the first quarter with Brooke Zylstra and Emma Zoet leading the way with 5 points each. Shayden Blankenship led the Falcons with 3.  The second quarter saw the Comets increase their lead led by Marissa Pottebaum’s 6 points with Payton Schwiesow adding 6 for West Sioux.  At the end of the first half the score was 30 – 16 in favor of Boyden-Hull.

    The second half of play saw more of the same with Boyden-Hull capitalizing off free throws making 6 of 8 in the third quarter.  West Sioux’s Megan Waterman with the hot hand contributing 6 points of her own for the Falcons, with the score being 46-25 at the end of the quarter still favoring the Comets.  Mikayla Van Es putting up 4 for the Comets and Emma McManaman 10 quick points for the Falcons to start the fourth quarter. The last two minutes of the contest saw both teams empty their benches.  The final score was 57 – 40 with Boyden-Hull victorious.

Brooke Zylstra led Comets with 15 points and Marissa Pottebaum added 10.  The Falcons had three players in double figures with Emma McManaman scoring 12 points, Payton Schwiesow with 11 and Emma Waterman added 10.

The Comets improve to 15-7 on the year and advance to play Western Christian at Western this Friday at 7:00 in the semifinal round. The Falcons end their season at 13-10.
