Jenness, Sikkink Place At Hastings Open

Luke Jenness and Bennett Sikkink placed in their respective weight classes to lead the Northwestern wrestling team at the Hastings Open held today at the Lynn Farell Arena in Hastings, Neb.

Jenness, ranked eighth at 184 in the latest NAIA Coaches’ poll, finished second and posted a 3-1 record on the day. After a first round bye, Jenness defeated Cyrus Marshall (Concordia) by major decision in the second round, earned a 4-0 win against jake Leicht (Briar Cliff) in the quarters and pinned Va Ili (Arizona Christian) en route to the championship match. The sophomore was defeated by Tyson Beauperthy (Midland) 7-2 in the title bout.

Sikkink placed fourth with a 4-2 record in the 197-pound weight division. Sikkink began the day with a major decision win against Mason Garcia (Concordia) and then lost to Andrew Hamilton (Grand View) 5-2 to drop into the consolation bracket. He followed with three consecutive wins, defeating Korben Shuler (Arizona Christian), Evan Morara (Hastings) and Jose Sanchez (Northwestern), before losing to Hamilton in the third place match, 3-1.

Nine of the 18 Northwestern wrestlers that competed this weekend picked up at last two wins. Trey Schuck (133), Breckin Sperling (149) and Blake Pomajzl (157) all went 3-2 on the day.

Head Coach Rik Dah’s squad will host Concordia, Waldorf and Dickinson State in duals on Saturday, Jan. 16, beginning at 11am.
