Nighthawks are State Tournament Bound

nighthawk logoSergeant Bluff, Iowa — #11 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is on to the State Tournament after defeating #7 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 4-0 Tuesday night in Sergeant Bluff.

The Nighthawks would jump to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sammy Blum and Cassie Van Beek would each reach on shots to the outfield, then Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag would sky one over the outfield wall for the 3-run home run. The game would remain scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Nighthawks would score on aggressive base running by Van Beek, and gave BHRV the 4-0 lead, and the Nighthawks would come away with the win.

Terri Deitloff took the loss for the Warriors. Deitloff went the distance but gave up 2 earned runs on 5 walks and 5 hits and struck out 3.

Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag got the win with the complete game shutout. She struck out 11 while giving up just 2 walks and one hit.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley improves to 25-7 on the year. The Nighthawks will take on Mount Veron in the first round of Class 3A State Softball at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, July 19th.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton ends their season at 28-11.
