Orabs Win In Cherokee

Cherokee, Iowa — Sheldon ran their district record to 2-1 with a 28-20 win at Cherokee Friday night. The season record is now even at 3-3.

Cherokee opened the game with an on side kick recovering at the Sheldon 47 yard line. A Wil Lugar to Jon Benson 18 yard pass play gave the Braves the early lead. The extra point was blocked and the Cherokee led 6-0 with 9:48 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon answered with a 65 yard drive. Quarterback Blake Radke scored on a 12 yard run. Mathew Meyer hit the extra point and the Orabs were in front 7-6 with 7:59 left in the first.

Cherokee would answer that touchdown with a 56 yard drive that ended on a Levi Pingel 6 yard run. A 2-point attempt failed and the Braves were back in front 12-7 with 3:28 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon scored near the end of the first half as the defense recovered a fumble at the Cherokee 31. The short field was converted on a 2 yard Jacob Enger 1 yard run. Meyer’s extra point put Sheldon in front 14-12 with 3:12 left in the half and that would be the score at halftime.

In the second half Sheldon scored first after the defense got a fourth down sack at the Cherokee 37 yard line. Jarrett Roos finished the drive on a 2 yard run and with Meyer’s extra point  the Orabs went up 21-12 with :24 seconds left in the third quarter.

Sheldon scored off the defense again in the fourth quarter as Coy DeBoer picked off a pass and returned it to the Sheldon 46. The offense cashed in on Radke’s second touchdown run of the night as he scored from 16 yards out. Meyer ended a perfect night with his fourth extra point of the night  and Sheldon had a 2 possession lead 28-12 with 5:45 left to play.

The Braves final score came as time expired on a 5 yard run by Luger that capped a 55 yard drive. Pingel scored on a 2-point conversion to make the final 28-20.

With the win Sheldon is 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in the district. Cherokee moves to 3-3 on the year as well with a district mark of 0-3.

Up next for the Orabs a final home game against Central Lyon George Little Rock. Cherokee will be at Okoboji.
