Special Teams And Defense Catapult Nighthawks To Victory

Hull, Iowa — #3 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley used 16 special teams points, seven sacks, and the first seven drives of the game starting in #9 Algona territory to get the 58-21 win over the Bulldogs Friday night at AR Hesla Field in Hull.

After a quick three and out by Algona, BHRV capitalized on a short field with a 23 yard Tanner Te Slaa touchdown pass to Landyn Van Kekerix to give the Nighthawks the 7-0 lead early. Algona responded on the following drive. On 4th -and-goal from the 32, Tyler Manske found Trevon Smith in the endzone for the score to tie it up at 7-7. On the ensuing kick-off Bryson Van Grootheest ran it back 85-yards for the score to put Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley back in front 14-7 with 5:40 left in the first.

The Nighthawks again started in Algona territory in the second quarter and Cade Fisher punched it in from 6 yards out to make the score 21-7. The Nighthawks again used another short field to their advantage when Te Slaa found Sam Remmerde behind the defenders for the 60 yard score making it 28-7. After a bad punt snap got passed Algona and out of the endzone, the safety made it 30-7, and on the ensuing drive Fisher and BHRV found paydirt again from 10 yards out making it 37-7. Algona would get into the endzone before the half when Carlos Gomez took a 46 yard pass for 6, but with 10 seconds to go in the half, a pooch kick to Landyn Van Kekerix was returned 60 yards for the score as time expired. At half it was 44-14.

To open the second half, Van Grootheest returned the kick off to the Algona 25, and Vance Katzfey scored on a 12 yard run to make it 51-14 early in the third.

Late in the 4th Lane Schmidt scored for the Nighthawks, and Algona’s Levi Clegg returned the ensuing kick off 88 yards for the score. BHRV got the non-district win 58-21.

With the win Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley improves to 4-0 on the season and will face Carroll at Rock Valley. Algona falls to 3-1 on the year and will host North Polk.
