Sheldon, Iowa — Northwest Iowa Community College student-athletes continued their fall seasons with competition in men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball.
The week was highlighted by Carson Arens setting a school record and earning a top-10 finish at the Buena Vista University Invitational.
Men’s Golf
The Thunder competed in the Iowa Central Fall Kickoff on September 14 at the Fort Dodge Country Club. Strong winds, rain and several lightning delays presented challenging conditions throughout the day.
Carson Arens led the varsity team with a 79, followed by Tavin Miller with an 82. Wyatt Wittrock and Karson Hoogendoorn each recorded an 84. Eli Segar led the junior varsity team with an 85.
The tournament provided the Thunder with an opportunity to compete on an outstanding course while gaining experience handling the challenges of playing in difficult weather conditions.
NCC returned to action September 19–20 at the Buena Vista University Invitational at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake. The Thunder again faced windy and wet conditions throughout the two-day tournament.
Arens set a school record during the opening round with a 2-over-par 73. Hoogendoorn followed with an 83, Wittrock recorded an 85 and Miller finished with an 86.
Arens and Hoogendoorn led the Thunder during the second round with matching scores of 78. Miller recorded an 85, while Cody Snyders finished with an 86. Wittrock withdrew after the first round due to a shoulder injury.
Arens completed the tournament tied for 10th place as an individual. The Thunder struck the ball well throughout the weekend and will continue working on consistency and finishing strong.
Men’s and Women’s Soccer
The Thunder struggled to find their rhythm against Hawkeye Community College as both the men’s and women’s teams opened conference play with losses. The women fell 8–0, while the men lost 7–0.
NCC battled throughout both matches but struggled to execute and maintain momentum as the games unfolded. The Thunder will look to regroup, learn from the conference opener and bounce back against North Iowa Area Community College.
Volleyball
The Thunder continued to show improvement over the weekend, falling 3–0 to Des Moines Area Community College before taking a set in a 3–1 loss to Western Iowa Tech Community College.
Eva Stammer and Raina Nibbelink led the Thunder attack Saturday with 10 kills each.
