Iowa Falls Iowa — Western Christian scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to claim the 1A football title with a 47-34 win over Iowa City Regina. For the Wolfpack it marks their first state football title. At the end of the first quarter it was tied at 7-7. Both teams put 20 points on the board in the second quarter and the scored was tied at 27-27 at the half. Western took the lead at 34-27 at the end of the third quarter before scoring a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to put the game away.
Ben Granstra and the running game led the offense. Granstra carried 39 times for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns on runs of 3, 4 and 1 yard. His final touchdown came with 1:38 to play to seal the win. Tyson Kooima completed 17-of-30 passes for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns including an 11 yard strike to Jesse Jansma in the second quarter and a 23 yard connection with Ben Gesink in the fourth quarter that extended the lead to 41-27. Gesink started the scoring for the Wolfpack with a 42 yard scoup and score fumble recovery that tied the game at 6-6 with :43 seconds left in the first quarter.
Western’s 47-34 win brings to an end a string of 6 straight championships by the Regals and also ends their 80 game winning streak against Class 1A teams. Western Christian ends the year at 12-1 with Iowa City Regina closing the year at 11-2.
