E-Sports Have Made Their Way To Sheldon High School

Sheldon, Iowa — When most people think of high school sports they think of football or basketball, but now there is more to sports than typical sporting events.

Toby Maggert, who is Sheldon High School’s Esports organizer, tells KIWA that Esports is competitive video gaming. He explains how the seasons work.

Maggert explains what the game Rocket League is.

Clint Badberg is the Esports coach at the high school. He says each league is a different game. Badberg tells us about upcoming leagues.

Badberg says, just like any other sport, there is a varsity team and a junior varsity team. The junior varsity team is mostly made up of freshmen and sophomores, though they could still make it to the varsity team.

Right now, according to Badberg, Esports is mostly played by kids who do not play sports.

Just like sports, Badberg says scholarships are given for Esports.

Maggert says they have been working on a way for the community to watch these matches, but it may take a while to get there.

He says if anyone wants to donate to the program it would be welcomed. To donate get ahold of Toby Maggert at Sheldon High School at (712) 324-2501.
