Fire Near Rock Rapids Destroys Storage Building, Boat, Snowmobiles, More

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A hog barn that had been converted into a storage shed, a boat, snowmobiles, and more were destroyed in a fire on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, near Rock Rapids.

According to Rock Rapids Fire Chief Ed Reck, at about 2:55 p.m., the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn on fire at 2951 140th Street, a mile west, a mile north and a half a mile west of the Casey’s in Rock Rapids.

The chief says the fire department saw the smaller, older cement-block structure with a wooden roof fully involved in flame as they approached the scene.

Reck says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by Lester Fire Department, who Reck says transported some water for them.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

Chief Reck reports that the structure and its contents, which included a boat, snowmobiles, a lawnmower, and miscellaneous items were all destroyed in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour to an hour and a half.
