2019-20 Budget, Teacher Contracts Reviewed at School Board Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa – The Sheldon Community Schools Board met in regular session on Wednesday, March 13th at 5:00 pm in the high school library.

High School Guidance Counselor Shelby Bosma shared various ways in which the high school informs students about job opportunities and future careers after high school.

There were seven open enrollments, one student service agreement, five employee resignations, two contract adjustments, and fourteen contract offers presented for consideration, all of which were approved by the board. The board also acknowledged a gift of $610 from Hefty Seed Company in Sheldon, which covered the cost of 35 first aid kits which will be mounted in classrooms at East Elementary.

Superintendent Cory Myer presented information to the board for consideration when reviewing the 2019 – 2020 school budget. The public budget hearing has been set for Wednesday, April 10th at 5:00 pm, as part of next month’s regular school board meeting.

There are currently five days that need to be made up due to inclement weather, and the plan is to add those five days to the end of the school year, as the school calendar indicates. Myer also suggested a date of Wednesday, March 20th at 5:00 pm for a Board Work Session, where short and long-term facility and project master plans will be discussed.

In new business, a tentative collective bargaining agreement has been reached between the Sheldon Community School District and the Sheldon Education Association for the 2019-20 school year. The Board reviewed teacher, co-curricular, and summer driver’s education contracts for the 2019-20 school year, which will be distributed Friday, March 15th, with a return deadline of Friday, April 9th, 2019. The proposed increase is $600 in base salary per education lane and $142 in the co-curricular calculator. Student teaching and intern agreements with UNI and Dordt Colleges were also agreed upon.

The next regular meeting of the Sheldon Community Schools Board has been set for Wednesday, April 10th at 5:00 pm in the High School Library.
