Bonfire Becomes Barn Fire

Primghar, Iowa — What started as a bonfire in the very early hours of Sunday morning, became a barn fire that did marginal damage to a barn southwest of Primghar.

According to Primghar Fire officials, they were called to the report of a barn on fire at 5640 410th Street, or about 2 miles south, and 2-3/4 miles west of Primghar, shortly after midnight Sunday morning.

Officials say a group of people had built a large wood pile for a bonfire, but the fire got out of their control, and spread to part of one side of the nearby barn, as well as to the barn’s roof.

Primghar firefighters say they, along with firefighters from the Paullina Fire Department, extinguished the blaze, as well as the burning wood pile.

Approximately 95-hundred gallons of water, and five gallons of foam were used to put the fire out, according to authorities.

Primghar firefigters were assisted at the scene by the Paullina Fire Department, O’Brien County Sheriff’s deputies, and officers from the Paullina and Sutherland Police Department.

Firefighters were reportedly on the scene for about two hours.
