Feed Fire Near Sutherland

Sutherland, Iowa — A quantity of feed was lost in a fire on Monday, September 28, 2020, near Sutherland.

According to Sutherland Fire Chief Mark Shriver, about 6:15 a.m., the Sutherland Fire Department was called to the report of a structure fire at Prairie Feed at 6625 460th Street, about a half a mile northeast of Sutherland.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke as they approached the scene. He says the fire was in an old fertilizer building where dried distiller’s grains or DDGs are now stored. He tells us it took them quite a while to find the burning feed as there was lots of smoke. Shriver says they used their thermal imaging camera to find the hot spots. Then they started moving the product out of the facility and the firefighters sprayed it with water as it came outside.

Shriver says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Calumet and Hartley firefighters.

Shriver tells us the cause of the fire appeared to be spontaneous combustion.

Chief Shriver reports that the damage was limited to the product itself, with no structural damage to the building reported.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for two to two and a half hours.
