Hartley Fire Department Responds To Smoke Call At HMS High School

Hartley, Iowa– The Hartley Fire Department was called out on Saturday, October 20, 2018.

According to Hartley Fire Chief Kevin Soden, about 1:10 p.m., the firefighters were called to the report of smoke in the weight room at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School.

The chief says the fire department smelled the smoke when they got into the building. He says they found a motor on a heater unit that had become hot and smoked up the room. He says they ventilated the building and cut power to that unit. Damage was limited to the unit itself, according to Soden.

Soden says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the smoke appeared to have been a malfunction in the unit.

He says the 12 firefighters that responded were there for about a half hour.
