(KIWA Staff Photo)Little Rock, Iowa — The Little Rock Fire Department was called out on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, for a fire near Little Rock.
According to Little Rock Fire Chief Austin Kannegieter, at about 8:25 p.m., the call came in of a “crop fire” southwest of 130th Street and McKinley Avenue, a mile east and a mile north of Little Rock.
When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw five or six piles of oat straw burning. He says they determined it was probably intentional, but not only had it not been called in, there was also no one around tending the fire, so they put it out.
Kannegieter says no injuries were reported.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for between 45 minutes and an hour.
Chief Kannegieter reminds people that even with the nice rain we got Wednesday night, the underlying conditions remain quite dry, so especially now — if you’re going to start a fire, call your county sheriff’s office first so they have a record of a controlled burn. That way, you may prevent the firefighters from having to leave their family or work and put their lives on the line. Plus, he says, if you’re going to start a fire, you need to stay with it in case it goes somewhere you didn’t intend for it to go.
