Sibley, Iowa — A St. Cloud, Minnesota man has been arrested after an incident in Sibley on Saturday.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Osceola County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 30-year-old Zachary Garvick of St. Cloud is accused of the destruction of property and operating while intoxicated — on a lawn mower.
In his statement, the deputy says he was dispatched to a report of a suspicious male, who later turned out to be Garvick. The report was that Garvick was operating a Toro zero-turn lawn mower on private property without permission, where he allegedly destroyed or damaged property. When confronted by the property owner, Garvick allegedly refused to identify himself and left the area on the lawn mower. The complainant later observed Garvick at the Sibley Liquor Store before notifying law enforcement. The deputy says he found Garvik operating the Toro zero-turn lawn mower westbound on 170th Street. He says Garvik was swerving within the westbound lane, so the deputy initiated a traffic stop. He says Garvick then pulled onto the shoulder of the roadway, but while attempting to stop, he suddenly placed the mower in reverse and backed toward the patrol vehicle, forcing the deputy to back up to avoid being struck.
The deputy says when he talked to Garvick, he immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. The deputy says there was an open beer near Garvik’s feet and an opened whiskey shooter near his left hip. Garvick is said to have admitted he had been drinking alcoholic beverages.
The deputy says he noticed multiple indicators of impairment during field sobriety tests, and a preliminary blood-alcohol breath test indicated an alcohol percentage of 0.214, which is over two and a half times the legal limit.
The deputy says he arrested Garvik, but it didn’t end there. He says when they got to the sheriff’s office, Garvick became increasingly agitated, belligerent, and verbally abusive toward law enforcement staff. He says Garvik refused to walk into the facility under his own power and had to be physically escorted inside, where his continued aggressive behavior forced staff to deploy a TASER. Garvick was then secured without further incident and processed into the Osceola County Jail.
Garvik was charged with operating while intoxicated, assaulting an officer, open container, and fifth-degree criminal mischief.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 12th, 2026.
