Sheldon, Iowa — A Texas man has been arrested on a felony eluding charge after an incident near Sheldon on Wednesday.
Records obtained through the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office tell us that the Iowa State Patrol alleges that 22-year-old Gabriel Ibanez of Elsa, Texas, is accused of eluding the trooper at high speed. He was arrested on Wednesday.
In his statement, the trooper says Ibanez was “recklessly operating a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu” while actively attempting to elude a marked Iowa State Patrol vehicle giving visual and audible signal to stop. The trooper says Ibanez was going 115 miles per hour in a 65 zone, “without due regard for property or others.” The trooper writes that Ibanez nearly collided with multiple vehicles as they passed.
Ibanez was charged with eluding at 25 miles per hour or more over the limit, a class D felony. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
The trooper says he also found two plastic tubes containing marijuana residue during the stop, so Ibanez also faces a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana. In addition, he faces misdemeanor counts of defective tires, no proof of insurance, reckless driving, speeding, and no valid driver’s license.
He faces a preliminary hearing on the charges on June 10th.
At last report, Ibanez remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar in lieu of bond.
