Sioux Center Woman Faces Felony Child Endangerment Charge

Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center woman has been arrested on child endangerment charges after an incident in that town.

A criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department says that 33-year-old Maria Vargas Hernandez of Sioux Center is accused of striking a victim and holding them by the neck. She was arrested on Monday.

In his statement, the officer says the victim stated they could not breathe while Vargas Hernandez held their neck.

Vargas Hernandez was charged with child endangerment – serious injury, a class C felony. If convicted, she could face up to ten years in prison.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for August 25th.

Vargas Hernandez was booked into the Sioux County Jail in Orange City and was released on Tuesday after posting a $10,000 cash or surety bond.
