Granville Mother Sentenced For Injuring 11-Month Old Son

Granville, Iowa — A Granville mother who had earlier pled not guilty to two charges of Child Endangerment with Serious Injury has now pled guilty as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

According to court records, an 11-month-old child was taken to the Orange City Hospital for a dislocated elbow. Authorities say that treatment revealed several fractures to the child’s arm. Court records indicate that a medical evaluation of the child was done at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, revealed other injuries had occurred within recent weeks prior to the elbow dislocation, which authorities say indicated a pattern of abuse.

The child’s mother, then-20-year-old Christina Fivecoate Champion, was arrested and charged on Sunday , November 14th. She pled not guilty to the charges last month.

According to online court records, a deal was reached between prosecutors and Fivecoate Champion, which involved the defendant changing her plea to guilty. As part of the plea agreement, Fivecoate Champion was sentenced to a year in jail, with all but 30 days suspended, and credit for time served. She’ll also serve 2-years’ probation following her jail sentence.

Online court records indicate that Fivecoate Champion will also be required to complete a mental health evaluation and take parenting classes.
