Ritter, Iowa — Four Sheldon residents were taken to the hospital in the aftermath of a car vs semi accident Monday afternoon near Ritter.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1996 Freightliner semi, driven by 52-year old Kurt Vander Schaaf of Sheldon, was eastbound on 280th Street, and had stopped for the stop sign at the intersection with Northwest Boulevard. Troopers say Vander Schaaf then pulled into the path of a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 29-year old Donnel Eaddy of Sheldon. Vander Schaaf told troopers that he hadn’t seen Eaddy’s car before he pulled into the intersection. Eaddy, who was southbound at the time, told troopers that he had seen the semi pull out, so he swerved to the right and applied his brakes in an attempt to avoid the collision, but was unable to stop in time. Troopers say Eaddy’s car struck the rear axle of the trailer Vander Schaaf was pulling.
According to the accident report, Eaddy and three of his passengers: 31-year old Douglas Strange of Sheldon; 24-year old Darrin Monroe of Sheldon; and 28-year old Steven Vorsaith of Sheldon, were transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by ambulances from SCAT, and Ashton Ambulance, with what were described as minor injuries. Vanderschaaf escaped injury.
Vander Schaaf was ticketed for Failure To Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.
Damage to the Freightliner was estimated at $4-thousand, while Troopers say Eaddy’s Chevy was totaled in the crash.
