Dordt College To Become “Dordt University” In 2019

Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux County institute of higher learning will change its name next year.

President of Dordt College, Dr. Erik Hoekstra released a statement on Thursday that said that as of May 13, 2019, Dordt College will operate and be known as “Dordt University.” He says it’s something they’ve been considering for a number of years.

Hoekstra says that by becoming Dordt University, the school will remove this barrier for international students and also open the doors more widely for Dordt graduates who work, live, and serve across the world. He says that as Dordt graduates leave to serve in Christ’s global Kingdom, they’ll now be able to have “Dordt University” on transcripts, diplomas, and résumés—and be more immediately recognized for the quality of the education which they have attained.

He tells us how news of the change has been received.

Dr. Hoekstra says that having the name “university” will not mean they have to compete with the likes of Iowa State and other research universities in higher education rankings, such as those released by US News and World Report, in which Dordt typically does very well. He says they will continue to be in the same category as before in such rankings.
