Kurtz: Texting While Driving Citation Numbers Soar

Northwest Iowa — July 1st of this year will mark the 1st anniversary of Iowa’s new texting and driving law. The new law made texting while driving a primary offense.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz explains what that means.

Trooper Kurtz says the Iowa State Patrol is committed to making the state’s roads safer, and the ability to stop a motorist for texting while driving is helping in that effort.

Kurtz says the one-thousand citation total is just for those tickets written by the Iowa State Patrol, and doesn’t include those written by county sheriff’s officers, or city police officers in Iowa.

Kurtz says Distracted Driving has been the cause of a high number of crashes in the past few years. If you’re driving, put your phone down and concentrate on your most important job…driving your vehicle. Your texts will still be there once you arrive at your destination.
