Maassen Is New Sheldon AD

Sheldon, Iowa — At their regular July meeting, which was held Wednesday evening, the Sheldon School Board approved the contract of Eric Maassen as the new Sheldon Activities Director, filling the position vacated when former Orab AD Justin Albers left to become middle school principal in his home town of Decorah.

Maassen will be paid $79-thousand for the job during the fiscal year that began July 1st.  Maassen says he excited for the opportunity to become Sheldon’s AD.

Maassen says that, by accepting the AD position, he has resigned some of his previous duties.

At Wednesday’s meeting the Board accepted Maassen’s resignation as TLC Instructional Coach, and Head Girls Golf Coach.  He will remain as Orab Head Boys Basketball Coach.

The Board also accepted resignations from Middle School Instructional Associate Danelle Perry, as well as East Elementary Library Associate Lori Meinecke.

In addition to approving Maassen’s employment contract as Activities Director, the Board also approved contracts for:  Emily Wisecup, who will teach Family Consumer Science, and act as FHA Sponsor, at a combined salary of $42,331; Steph Wolf as East Elementary Principal’s Secretary at a salary of $14 per hour; and Matt Dykstra, who will teach High School Special Education at a salary of $40,800.

The Board recognized Noreen Vande Weerd on her retirement as K-12 Library and Media Specialist at Wednesday’s meeting, as well.

In other action, the Board approved setting up an Enterprise Fund for the FFA Farm, which sets the farm up as its own business, allowing more flexibility than if their funds remained part of the Activity Fund.  The Board voted to transfer $45,327.24 to that Enterprise Fund.  The Board then approved the purchase of a 2017 Ford F-150 pickup truck from Drenkow Motors in Sheldon.  This truck has some very minor hail damage that allowed for a sale price of $36,495, which will be paid for out of the FFA Farm’s new Enterprise Fund.

The Board also voted to approve Superintendent Robin Spears’ reccommendation that the District continue with the 10% Instructional Support Levy.  The proposed levy is a continuation of the current levy that is set to expire at the end of June next year.  The Board will hold a Public Hearing on the issue as part of their regular August meeting. That Public Hearing will be held at 5:30 pm on Monday, August 14th.

In other action, the Board reappointed LaDonn Hartzell as Secretary/Treasurer for the next year, and decided on their legislative priorities for the coming year.

The next regular meeting of the Sheldon School Board will be Monday, August 14th at 5:00 pm, in the high School library.
