Sheldon, Iowa — Health officials are giving area families a heads-up about a new vaccination requirement for students going back to school this fall. Under a new state law, a meningitis shot will be required for students entering the 7th and 12th grades.
O’Brien County Public Health Nurse Lisa Youngers tells us more.
As a convenience to Sheldon area residents, O’Brien County Public Health will hold Meningitis Vaccination Clinics in Sheldon.
Youngers says you can come anytime during those hours, no appointment needed.
She says anyone with questions should call her office.
The vaccine has been recommended for pre-teenagers since 2005 and officials don’t anticipate any shortages. Students entering those grades will be required to show proof of the meningitis vaccination.
Meningitis is a serious and potentially-deadly bacterial disease.
In case you missed it, the number for O’Brien County Public Health is 712-957-0105. The dates for the vaccination clinics are the next two Mondays, August 7th and 14th from 5 until 8 pm at the Sheldon Public Library.
