Sheldon 2021 Street Improvement Projects Outlined

Sheldon, Iowa — Some of the Sheldon streets that are in the worst condition are scheduled to be totally re-built in 2021.

Sheldon Public Works Director Todd Uhl outlined the 2021 Street Improvement plans at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. The street sections in the improvement plan include: Oak Street from North 18th Avenue to Washington Avenue; North 18th Avenue from Oak Street to the Courtyard; Pine Street from 2nd Avenue (Old 60) to 5th Avenue; North 5th Avenue from Pine Street to a point 2,000 feet north; and 3rd Avenue from 11th Street to the railroad tracks just south of the Post Office. The estimated cost of these projects totals more than 2.5 million dollars.

Uhl told the council that he had hoped to include more areas in this project, but the condition of some of the streets will require more work than had originally been expected. He emphasized that the work will be a complete re-build including storm sewer improvements.

The project will go to bids on December 22nd, with bid opening January 6th. The work has been divided into four sections, to avoid having all the streets be torn up at the same time. The work completion date has been set for November 15th, 2021, with the exception of the section of North 18th Avenue, which must be completed by June 25th to accommodate the July 3rd Independence Day celebration at Village Northwest Unlimited.
