Sheldon Council Talks Garbage Contract, Downtown Recycling Container

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met in regular session Wednesday afternoon, one of the major items on their agenda was the new garbage hauling contract, as well as the future of the downtown recycling collection container.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker explained the changes in the new garbage hauling contract to the Council during Wednesday’s meeting.

The Council had voted last year to remove the downtown recycling collection container from the city parking lot on the north side of the Library in January, 2024. Kooiker addressed that issue at Wednesday’s council meeting.

De Kruif Disposal owner Mark Gurtler told the Council he has only one issue about having the recycling collection container at his business.

In other action during Wednesday’s meeting, the Council heard a report from O’Brien County Economic Development Director Kiana Johnson, on the activities of O’Brien County Economic Development over the past year. They also heard an update on the proposed 28E agreement between the Sheldon Community Schools and Sheldon Police Department for a School Resource Officer from the police department to serve in the Sheldon Community Schools.
