UPDATE: Snowfall Amounts Varied Around Area

dot snow plowsNorthwest Iowa — Snowfall amounts from yesterday’s storm varied widely across northwest Iowa.

The town of George received 7.5 inches of snow in yesterday’s storm, with Sibley measuring 8 inches, Sheldon 8.5 inches.  The lightest reported snowfall was 5.5 inches at Rock Rapids, with the highest total being 11 inches at both Ireton and Sioux Center.

And, as northwest Iowans dig out today, they’re reminded that continued light snowfall, combined with blowing snow from gusty north winds are causing our Winter Storm Warning to be in effect until 6:00 this evening for O’Brien and Osceola Counties in the listening area..

Even when the snowfall ends, travel may still remain difficult for a while, as road crews try and recover from the storm’s remnants.  The gusty northwest winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, which will also contribute to difficult travel conditions in some areas.

While you’re clearing the snow from your sidewalks and driveways, area fire departments remind you to clear the snow away from fire hydrants, as well.  They ask that you clear an area surrounding the hydrant, as well as the area between the hydrant and the street, so that in case of emergency, firefighters don’t have to spend precious time locating and clearing the hydrants.
