Strong Winds Fan Flames, Drop A Tree Onto A Car

Northwest Iowa — Saturday’s strong, gusty winds kept area fire departments hopping, caused high profile vehicles to be blown off the road and even toppled at least one tree in the area.

The winds, which gusted to nearly 60 miles per hour in Sheldon at times, were responsible for fanning numerous grass, ditch and field fires around the area. Shortly after 3:00 pm the Sheldon Fire Department were paged out to the call of a ditch fire and a sparking utility pole on the southwest edge of Sheldon.

The winds also caused problems for drivers of high profile vehicles, with several reports of trucks and towed trailers being blown off the road. At one point Saturday afternoon, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office advised no travel in that county for high profile vehicles, due to the wind.

In Sheldon there was a tree that was blown over in the 700 block of 6th Street, crashing down onto a parked car.
