Spencer, Iowa (KUOO) — Drivers traveling through the north intersection of Highways 18 and 71, known locally as the North Y, will see new enforcement and monitoring tools as the Iowa Department of Transportation adds extra safety measures.
Jessica Felix, a District 3 Engineer with the Iowa DOT, says speed-feedback trailers are being installed this week. These devices are being added alongside the traffic cameras already in place at the intersection. She says the additional equipment and law enforcement will continue to be present prior to the construction of a roundabout at the site.
A bid letting for crossovers and a detour route is scheduled for July, with the roundabout project itself expected to go out for bid in October.
The announcement of these added safety measures follows a serious crash on April 16 involving a motorcycle and a semi. The motorcyclist suffered significant injuries.
