Northwest Iowa — It’s about time for a heat wave. That’s according to the National Weather Service.
We talked with weather technician Tim Masters at the weather service’s Sioux Falls office. He says we can expect some heat for at least the next few days.
Previous forecasts had the highs in the low to mid 90s, but they’ve backed that off by a couple of degrees. By the current forecast, it looks like the heat will stick around for at least a week.
Weather experts have been talking about a “heat dome” for this area. We asked Masters what that is.
Usually we get heat and humidity as the prelude to severe weather. But Masters says because of the way the heat will come in, we’ll actually have LESS chance for severe weather.
He has a few tips for those who need to be in the heat.
Experts also remind you to never leave pets in a vehicle, but especially during the summer heat, as temperatures can rise to deadly levels in a closed vehicle in a matter of minutes. Also, check on any elderly neighbors or family members to make sure they’re staying cool. That’s especially important because elderly individuals often prefer warmer temperatures, but might not realize that they’re getting too warm.
