Hundreds Attend Sheldon Memorial Day Ceremony

Sheldon, Iowa – Sheldon’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony was held Monday in the Sheldon High School Auditorium, with a good sized crowd in attendance.

The ceremony featured the advancing of the colors by the American Legion Color Guard, placing of the POW flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the presentation of wreaths by the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as a reading by Rachel Kleinhesselink.

The Sheldon High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Cliff St. Clair, played the March of the Armed Forces, with every veteran in attendance being urged to stand when the theme song of their branch of service was played.

The featured speaker at Monday’s ceremony was retired Air Force Colonel Joe Ascherl. The crowd was invited to sing God Bless America, led by Tricia Meendering, who described the song as a solemn prayer.

The ceremony ended with the benediction by Chaplain Mark Poyzer, followed by the Retirement of the Colors by the American Legion Color Guard, during which a trumpet solo of Taps was performed by St. Clair.
