Wahpeton, Iowa (KUOO) — Some Eurasian watermilfoil was recently found growing in one of the canals in Wahpeton.
Andrew Carlson, a fisheries management biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the discovery happened somewhat incidentally.
Carlson says it’s not the first time the invasive weed has been found there.
He says the find emphasizes the DNR’s motto to boaters: clean, drain, and dry.
Carlson also described how to identify Eurasian watermilfoil.
He encourages the public to report anything suspicious to the DNR.
As a reminder, it is illegal in Iowa to possess or transport prohibited aquatic invasive species such as Eurasian watermilfoil.
