Joint High School and Community College Enrollment Up in Iowa

Statewide Iowa (RI) — The number of high school students who are also taking community college courses continues to rise.

Amy Gieseke, bureau chief for community colleges at the Iowa Department of Education, says joint enrollment now makes up a significant share of community college participation statewide.

Gieseke says that a student only needs to take one community college class to be included in the headcount enrollment, so joint-enrollment credit hours account for 32% of all community college credit hours statewide.

Gieseke says the number of high school students joint enrolling has increase quite a bit since it started in 2010.

Gieseke says girls continue to outpace boys, making up 54% of joint-enrolled high school students.
