Pork Producers, Cong. Hinson Push for ‘Save Our Bacon Act’

Statewide Iowa (RI) — Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson recently joined pork producers at a farm near Marshalltown to discuss the “Save Our Bacon Act,” legislation aimed at overriding California’s Proposition 12, which requires pork sold in California to be raised under that state’s animal-housing rules.

Dean Frazier raises hogs on a farm near Liscomb that has been in the family for 155 years.

He says Iowa hogs are safely raised, and these rules increase the cost of pork.

Hinson, who is running for the open U.S. Senate seat, has been targeted by ads that say the “Save Our Bacon Act” will hurt farmers. Frazier says the ads are a smear campaign against Hinson and the rest of the Iowa delegation.

Hinson says the bill protects Iowa producers and does not hurt those in California.

Hinson also criticized her Democratic opponent, Josh Turek, saying he follows national party leadership on the issue and has missed votes at the Iowa capitol.

She says that includes missing the vote on the Iowa Agriculture bill.

Representatives of other agricultural groups, pork producers, and Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig also attended the event.
