(KIWA Staff Photo)Remsen, Iowa (RI) — A time capsule buried in 1976 under the flagpole at Remsen’s former City Hall has been unearthed and opened.
City Administrator Rachel Keffeler says the box was filled with memorabilia from community groups that were popular 50 years ago.
The capsule was buried on July 4th, 1976, with the intention of opening it during the nation’s 250th anniversary. The city plans to rebury it and is asking local businesses to contribute items for the next opening.
Remsen, a town of about 1,800 residents, is considered a legacy community where many families have lived for generations. Keffeler says the time capsule will help connect current residents with future ones.
The capsule will be opened again in 2076 — 300 years after the founding of the United States and 100 years after it was first buried.
