Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — The Iowa DOT has used the same software vendor that mistakenly added more than 6,000 non-citizens to New Jersey’s voter rolls. However, Iowa does not have a law like New Jersey’s that allows people to register to vote while applying for a driver’s license.
Governor Kim Reynolds says Iowa’s elections remain safe and secure.
New Jersey officials say the non-citizens involved had marked themselves as ineligible to vote when applying for a driver’s license, but the software vendor added them to the voter rolls anyway. About 400 of those individuals voted in 2023 and 2024.
Reynolds says the episode may prompt congress to act.
Iowa has required voters to show a photo ID since 2017. Secretary of State Paul Pate — Iowa’s top election official — says the state is not impacted by the software problems cited in New Jersey.
The vendor, IDEMIA, provides the digital version of an Iowa’s driver’s license used for Mobile ID, which can be presented at airport security or to verify age for alcohol or tobacco purchases. New Jersey officials say they are seeking a new vendor.
