Remsen and Kingsley, Iowa (RI) — The high school football season gets an early start Friday night with several week zero matchups across the area.
Remsen St, Mary’s looks for a return to prominence as the Hawks open at home against Ar-We-Va. After winning the 8-player state title in 2024, Remsen St. Mary’s slumped to 3-5 last fall and was forced to forfeit two games due to a lack of players.
That’s Hawks coach Tim Osterman, who says last season was a learning experience for everyone.
Osterman says he’s focused more on how his team plays than the final score.
Also in 8-player, Kingsley-Pierson opens at home against Coon Rapids-Bayard. The Panthers finished 6-4 a year ago, and coach Travis Neumann wants to see improved play from his offensive line.
Neumann must replace several skill players from last season.
Kingsley-Pierson will be tested early. After Friday night, the Panthers host perennial power Algona Garrigan next week, and Neumann says experience gained from last season will help.
Many schools not playing Week Zero games will still be on the field today, holding scrimmages and controlled practices as they prepare for next week’s official season openers.
