Fire Destroys Shop South Of Rock Rapids

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A workshop was destroyed in a fire on Thursday, December 31, 2020, near Rock Rapids.

According to Rock Rapids Fire Chief Ed Reck, about 3:35 p.m., the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of a structure fire on K52 just north of A34, the home of Krull Wood Products & Custom Pallets, about five miles south of Rock Rapids on K52.

The chief says the fire department saw the workshop fully involved in flame as they approached the scene, which they were able to extinguish.

Reck says no injuries were reported. He says the George Fire Department was also called as they have a mutual aid agreement with them that they report to each other’s structure fires. He says the Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative linemen were called as well to cut the power since there was a transformer right next to the building.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be related to a skid loader in the building. He says they believe the cause is electrical in nature, but it’s under investigation.

Chief Reck reports that the shop was basically totaled.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.
