Hawarden Man Arrested On Felony Eluding Charge

Hawarden — A Hawarden man has been arrested on a felony eluding charge after an incident near Hawarden.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Hawarden Police Department, 40-year-old Christopher Svoboda of Hawarden is accused of eluding the law and helping a passenger flee prosecution. He was arrested on Thursday, October 26th.

In his statement, the officer states that Svoboda attempted to prevent the apprehension of the other person by failing to bring the vehicle he was drving to a stop after visual and audible signals. He is accused of driving over 100 miles per hour in a 55 zone. The officer says multiple traffic offenses were committed in the process.

Svoboda was charged with eluding at 25 mph or more over the limit, second or subsequent offense. If convicted, Svoboda could face up to five years in prison.

He faces a preliminary hearing on Thursday.

At last report, Svoboda remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City in lieu of a $5000 personal recognizance bond.
