Hull And Rock Valley Firefighters Put Out Brush Fires Near High Schools

Hull and Rock Valley, Iowa — The Hull and Rock Valley fire departments have been busy responding to calls this week.

Monday, they responded to a small ditch fire south of Rock Valley, near 340th and Elmwood Avenue.

Tuesday, there was one fire in Hull and one fire in Rock Valley. The first call was to a field near the Rock Valley High School at about 11:30 a.m. Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis reports that the fire was in a cornstalk field. He says they were lucky as the field was somewhat shielded from the wind, and only about a quarter of an acre burned. Rock Valley and Hull firefighters were thee for about a half an hour. The cause is undetermined.

Then, just before 3:00 p.m., there was another fire near another high school. Hull Fire Chief Greg Van Roekel says the fire started at the Hull tree dump, where grass clippings from last year must have spontaneously combusted. The resulting fire burned three or four acres and even burned some grass at the adjacent Trinity High School. Hull and Rock Valley firefighters were there for an hour to an hour and a half, according to the chief.
