Newer Car Destroyed In Car Fire North of Orange City

Orange City, Iowa — An SUV was destroyed in a fire on Monday morning, February 6, 2023, near Orange City.

According to Orange City Fire Chief Denny Vander Wel, at about 7:55 a.m., the Orange City Fire Department was called to the report of a vehicle fire north of 410th Street on Jackson Avenue, about two miles north of Orange City.

The chief says the fire department saw a 2019 Chevy Equinox totally involved in fire as they approached the scene.

Vander Wel says no injuries were reported.

He tells us they have a new automatic mutual aid agreement with Alton that both fire departments get paged to all calls in each others’ districts except calls to assist an ambulance, so Alton firefighters responded as well.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined due to extensive damage under the hood. The fire got into the cabin too and completely destroyed it. The driver said it hadn’t been running “100 percent,” and going up the hill it stalled and stuttered and the driver began to see smoke.

Chief Vander Wel reports the vehicle was totaled in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for between a half hour and 45 minutes.
