Rock Valley, Iowa — Some Rock Valley residents are homeless after a fire on Saturday night, February 4, 2023, in Rock Valley.
According to Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis, at about 6:15 p.m., the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of a garage fire at 2716 14th Street, on Rock Valley’s east side.
The chief says the fire department saw flames 20+ feet in the air coming from the attached garage as they approached the scene. He says they used a two-and-a-half-inch hose and the deck gun from one of their trucks to fight the fire.
Eshuis says no injuries were reported.
The fire department was assisted by the Hull and Sioux Center fire departments.
He says an occupant had been working on a snowmobile in the garage, so it is believed something went wrong with that, which started the fire.
Chief Eshuis reports that the house and garage were possibly totaled, but certainly received major damage. The house sustained some fire damage but significant water and smoke damage, plus the ceiling had to be torn down to gain access to see if there was fire in the attic.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three and a half hours.
Eshuis tells us the family is being assisted with clothing and living arrangements by their church.
