Rock Valley, Iowa — A Rock Valley man is dead in the aftermath of two-vehicle crash south of Rock Valley Tuesday evening.
Sioux County authorities say the mishap occurred shortly after 10:15 Tuesday evening at the intersection of 340th Street and Eagle Avenue, three miles south of Rock Valley.
According to authorities 61-year-old Stephen Richter of Rock Valley was westbound on 340th Street, driving a 1995 Freightliner straight truck, and 51-year-old Robert De Jong, also of Rock Valley, was southbound on Eagle Avenue, driving a 2003 Buick Park Avenue. Deputies say the two vehicles collided in the intersection.
Sioux County authorities say De Jong was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sioux County Medical Examiner, as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Richter was transported by Rock Valley Ambulance to Hegg Health Center Avera for treatment of his injuries.
The Freightliner sustained approximately $15,000 in damage. The Buick sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage, according to authorities.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Rock Valley Police Department, Rock Valley Ambulance and Rock Valley Fire Department.
Deputies say the accident remains under investigation by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.
