Ireton, Iowa — A shed and the artwork it contained, valued at possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars were damaged in a fire on Sunday, November 24, 2019, near Ireton.
According to Ireton Fire Chief Richard Steckelberg, about 4:30 p.m., the Ireton Fire Department was called to the report of a structure fire at 2676 450th Street, a mile north and three east of Ireton.
The chief says the fire department saw flames coming from the shed as they approached the scene. He says the shed contained a great deal of pottery and other artwork. He says they used water to fight the fire.
Steckelberg says no injuries were reported.
The fire department was assisted by Sioux Center and Maurice fire departments.
He says the cause of the fire is unknown, but it’s thought to be related to a propane pottery kiln.
Chief Steckelberg reports that he estimated the damage to the shed, the pottery, the other artwork, and the other contents could be $200,000.
He says the about 40 firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two and a half hours.
Meanwhile, two other fire calls were reported recently. The Inwood Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of 220th Street, a mile north of Inwood for a tractor fire on Friday morning, November 22nd. We are told that the fire had been put out by a fire extinguisher before the arrival of the fire department. The Sanborn Fire Department responded to a call of a tractor fire a mile north of Sanborn on Redwood Avenue about 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, November 23rd. Fire Chief Randy Lyman says it was a small fire around the turbo of the tractor that was easily extinguished and didn’t cause much damage.
