Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon emergency workers were kept busy Tuesday with a pair of personal injury traffic accidents on city streets.
According to Sheldon Police, the first mishap occurred at 7:59 Tuesday morning at the intersection of 6th Street and 4th Avenue, when a northbound 2011 Hyundai Sonata, driven by 28-year-old Charlesetta Scott of Sheldon entered the intersection with 6th Street and was struck by a westbound 2004 Ford F250 pickup, driven by 49-year-old Kennan Getting of Sheldon.
Officers say Scott was taken to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by SCAT in the aftermath of the crash.
Damage to Scott’s Hyundai was estimated at $10,000, while Getting’s pickup sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage.
While crews were still working at the scene of that crash, the second happened about 5 blocks away.
In that incident, Sheldon Police say a 2012 Kia Forte, driven by 42-year-old Jennifer Van Der Vliet of Hull was northbound on 7th Avenue and a 2007 Pontiac Torrent, driven by 18-year-old Jack Bartz of Sheldon, was westbound on 5th Street when the vehicles collided in the intersection. Police say both drivers reported not seeing the other vehicle. Police blame excessive speed on the snow-covered roadway for the crash.
Van Der Vliet was taken to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by SCAT.
Damage to each vehicle was estimated at about $7,000.
Bartz was reportedly cited for Failure to Wear a Seat Belt.
Sheldon Police were assisted at both scenes by Sheldon Fire, Sheldon EMA and multiple ambulances from the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team.
