South Dakota Man Injured When Motorcycle Struck By Police Car

Sheldon, Iowa — A Brookings, South Dakota man was taken to the hospital after the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a Sheldon police car Friday morning.

According to the accident report from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 11 o’clock Friday morning when a 2016 Ford Explorer police vehicle, driven by 60-year old Scott De Goei of Sheldon, was eastbound on 16th Street, and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with 2nd Avenue (Business 60).

The report says a 2016 Honda motorcycle, driven by 61-year old Todd Sumner of Brookings, South Dakota, had pulled out of Glen’s Sport Center, heading north on 2nd Avenue, on a test drive, and began to turn left at 16th Street to go west. According to the report, De Goei failed to see the Sumner motorcycle, and began to continue east through the intersection when his SUV struck Sumner’s motorcycle on the left side, knocking the motorcycle to the ground.

Deputies say Sumner was transported by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Damage to the motorcycle Sumner was riding were estimated to be about $2,850, while damage to De Goei’s police SUV were estimated at $3-thousand.

De Goei was cited for Failure To Yield Right of Way From a Stop Sign.
