Spencer Man Gets 30 Years For Trying To Kill Royal Woman

Spencer, Iowa — A Spencer man will be spending several years in prison after his sentencing this week in connection with an October stabbing.

Authorities say 25-year-old Matthew Alan Young had been facing a trio of felony charges for allegedly stabbing 26-year-old Cassandra Bicking multiple times at a Royal residence on Sunday, October 24th. Young was arrested shortly after the incident at his Spencer residence.

Young was charged with:  Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony; Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury, a Class C Felony; and Going Armed With Intent, a Class D Felony.

According to online court records, after an earlier not guilty plea, Young changed his plea to guilty Wednesday morning in Clay County District Court. As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Young entered pleas of guilty to the Attempted Murder Charge, as well as the Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury charge. The least serious of the charges, Going Armed With Intent, was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Online court records indicate Judge Nancy Whittenburg sentenced Young 25-years on the Attempted Murder Charge and an additional 5-years on the Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury charge, with the sentences to be served consecutively. Young must serve at least 70% of his sentence before being eligible for parole or work release, according to online court records. He was also fined $1,025.
