Ireton, Iowa — Three Sioux County fire departments were called out on Sunday, August 15, 2021, for a call near Ireton.
According to Ireton Fire Chief Richard Steckelberg, in the 1:00 p.m. hour, the Ireton Fire Department was called to the report of a manure pile on fire near 430th and Dipper Avenue, three miles west and four north of Ireton.
The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke coming from the manure pile as they approached the scene. He says they used water, spread out the pile into farm ground, and workers disked the manure to smother the fire.
Steckelberg says no injuries were reported.
The chief tells us the Ireton firefighters were assisted by the Hawarden and Sioux Center Fire Departments.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be spontaneous combustion.
Chief Steckelberg says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for two and a half hours.
