Two Fire Departments Fight Weekend Fires

Ireton, Iowa — A grove and a salvage car were damaged in a fire on Friday, March 25, 2022, near Ireton.

According to Ireton Fire Assistant Chief Brian Smit, in the 5:00 p.m. hour, while providing mutual aid to the Hawarden Fire Department, who was fighting a hog barn fire, the Ireton Fire Department was called to the report of an abandoned acreage fire at 2252 510th Street, four miles south and a mile and a half west of Ireton.

The chief says the fire department saw a larger grass fire as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Smit says no injuries were reported.

He says a tree pile fire is believed to be the cause of the fire.

Assistant Chief Smit reports that some grass, the grove, and a salvage car were all damaged in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.

Hartley, Iowa — A waterway was burned in a fire on Sunday, March 27, 2022, near Hartley.

According to Hartley Assistant Chief Larry Espey, about 9:20 p.m., the Hartley Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near Highway 18 and Taft Avenue, about four miles west of Hartley.

The assistant chief says the fire department saw a grass fire in a waterway as they approached the scene, which they extinguished with water.

Assistant Chief Espey says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Assistant Chief Espey reports that three to four acres burned.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour.
