Sioux Falls, South Dakota — The National Weather Service has confirmed that there was a tornado in the Archer, Iowa area on Monday evening, April 13th.
Weather service officials tell us that severe thunderstorms rapidly developed on the afternoon of April 13, 2026, in far southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa. Isolated storms quickly developed by mid-afternoon, expanding in coverage through the evening as they tracked eastward.
They tell us that, while the vast majority of severe weather reports involved large hail, two tornadoes were reported. These weak tornadoes, located near Webb and Archer, impacted mostly farm fields. One home near the path of the Webb tornado did sustain minor damage.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist Peter Rogers at the weather service’s Sioux Falls office says the Archer tornado was short-lived and stayed out in the open fields. They couldn’t give it an EF rating because it didn’t damage anything they could inspect to determine its strength. He says they estimate it touched down at about 6:30 p.m., and it was on the ground for about five minutes. First-hand accounts and video were sent to their office, says Rogers.
